China calls Biden administration ‘a new window of hope’ for US relations 1

Chinese officials believe that President-elect Joe Biden will “restore normalcy” in US-China relations — claiming that “a new window of hope” is opening with the exit of the uncompromising Trump administration.

“China-US relations have come to a new crossroads, and a new window of hope is opening,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in an interview with state-owned broadcaster CGTN.

“We hope that the next US administration will return to a sensible approach, resume dialogue with China, restore normalcy to the bilateral relations, and restart cooperation,” he went on.

The Trump administration took a hardline approach to the Communist nation, engaging in a tariff-driven trade war in 2018 and signing sanctions this year over China’s elimination of Hong Kong autonomy

President Trump has also been unequivocal in his condemnation of China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has so far killed 352,000 Americans.

On the campaign trail, Biden promised to “get tough” on Beijing’s trade abuses and intellectual property theft, but was critical of Trump’s trade war with China and is expected to take a softer approach to the Communist regime.

Questions have also been raised about his family’s personal business dealings in China, including an investment firm that son Hunter Biden formed with institutions owned by the Chinese Communist Party just days after flying aboard Air Force Two to Beijing with his then-veep father in 2013.

Yi said China-US relations had run into “unprecedented difficulties” in recent years and accused US policymakers of holding a “serious misconception” about China.

“Some see China as the so-called biggest threat and their China policy based on this misperception is simply wrong,” he said, accusing the Trump administration of trying to “suppress China and start a new Cold War.”

The top Beijing official also boldly claimed that “China never meddles in the internal affairs of the United States” — flying in the face of Beijing’s massive and well-documented espionage and influence campaigns.

In a September interview with The Post, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said China’s New York consulate was a major spy hub.

The US government also shut down the Chinese consulate in Houston in July after two military assets there were charged with trying to steal COVID-19 vaccine research.

Beijing has also poured hundreds of millions of dollars into US Ivy League institutions, including a $1 million donation to Columbia University to underwrite an educational program that the State Department has since branded part of China’s “global influence and propaganda apparatus.”

Yi said Beijing’s policy toward Washington was “consistent and stable” and called on the US to respect China’s ruling Communist government.

“We are ready to co-develop with the United States a relationship based on coordination, cooperation and stability,” he said.

“Likewise, the United States also needs to respect the social system and development path chosen by the Chinese people,” he added.
