Here’s hoping that the “happiest place on Earth” doesn’t become the sickest.

California is closing in on a vaccination benchmark that would allow businesses, including amusement parks, to reopen to greater numbers by April 1, according to the state’s blueprint for phased reopening.

For the home county of Disneyland in particular, officials have said that the milestone could arrive sooner than expected — potentially next week, according to Orange County chief executive officer Frank Kim.

Orange County teeters between the state’s “red” and less severe “orange” tiers in terms of COVID-19 case rates per 100,000 people and positive test rates, respectively. Currently, Orange County’s positive test rate sits at 3.2%, with an average of 6 new cases per 100,000 residents. However, it borders some of the state’s worst-hit areas, including Los Angeles.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek said on Tuesday that they expected to reopen Disnleyand by “late April” to a guest capacity of 15% — prior to Orange County CEO Kim’s predictions.

The turning point would allow the massively popular theme park to open at a capacity that is two-thirds — approximately 66% — over what was originally anticipated by park authorities just a few weeks ago, Deadline has reported.

The accelerated reopening would bring the total guest capacity for outdoor attractions up to 25%, per state pandemic restrictions. The same would apply to indoor businesses, such as restaurants and cinemas.
