A second NBA game was postponed Sunday by a lack of available players because of COVID-19, but the league reportedly is planning to carry on with the season as scheduled.
The Celtics-Heat game that was scheduled to be played Sunday night was postponed because of a lack of players due to COVID-19 testing, The Athletic reported. But the league has no plans to pause the season, ESPN reported, despite cases rising around the NBA and more players being ruled out through contact tracing.
While the Celtics were set to play with the minimum eight available players, with nine ruled out through health and safety protocols or injuries, it was the Heat’s testing and contact tracing issues that forced the game to be postponed, per The Athletic. One of the Heat players returned an inconclusive test, according to the report, with contact tracing knocking out enough players that Miami would not have had the minimum required.
The postponement is the second of the NBA season after the Rockets’ season-opener was postponed because of a lack of available players. Others have been forced to play with reduced rosters, as the 76ers did Saturday with the minimum eight active players.
Celtics star Jayson Tatum tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, according to reports, with six of his teammates being ruled out for Sunday’s game through health and safety protocols.
