NY Legislator Ron Kim Claims There’s Bipartisan Support for Starting the “Impeachment Process” Against Cuomo

New York assemblyman Ron Kim is doubling down on his criticism of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who he claims threatened to “destroy” him over the ongoing nursing home scandal. During a Friday appearance on The View, Kim, a Democrat, described Cuomo as an “abuser” who has attempted to strong arm legislators at various times throughout his tenure. As a result of Cuomo’s alleged behavior, Kim revealed that assemblymen on both sides of the aisle are “actively talking” about impeaching the governor. “Should he resign?” asked Kim. “Cuomo himself should be asking himself that question in this moment.”

It’s been quite a busy week for Kim, a Queens assemblyman who has accused Cuomo of threatening him if he did not help dismiss claims that Cuomo covered up the total number of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes (the governor has denied allegations of a cover-up and accused Kim of lying about their phone conversation). This morning, Kim told The View hosts that Cuomo first called him on February 11, at which point the governor “spent 10 minutes threatening [his] career and ordering [him] to issue a statement that would be used to cover for the state secretary.” As reported by the New York Post, Cuomo’s secretary Melissa DeRosa admitted on a conference call last week that the administration withheld data about the nursing home deaths for fear that it would be “used against” them by federal prosecutors.

Kim refused, and he recalled that over the next few days, he received “eight phone calls from the governor and his staff” urging him to issue a statement. The assemblyman then hired a lawyer, as he realized that Cuomo is “continuing to ask me to cover up for his secretary.”

When Meghan McCain asked if Cuomo has “made threats of retaliation before,” Kim insisted that he has. “Cuomo is an abuser. He has abused his power, and abuses our powers,” he said, explaining that the New York governor is “worse than TJ Ducklo,” the Biden aide who resigned after threatening a reporter. Kim then claimed that “the abuse is not unique” to him, as Cuomo’s staffers have called three of his female colleagues expletive-laden terms (it was bleeped on The View) in the past.

“Because the verbal violence against women is normalized, it’s barely caused a stir,” he told The View‘s co-host. “I want to use this time today to highlight it, because there are outspoken women in New York State who have taken this abuse, as well, and don’t get the support that they rightly deserve.”

While Cuomo, through a spokesperson, has said that Kim’s allegation is “part of a years-long pattern of lies by Mr. Kim against this administration,” the assemblyman dismissed that statement as a “classic Cuomo deflection.” Added Kim, “[It’s] straight out of the Cuomo playbook. But unfortunately, this playbook won’t save the governor from the truth.”

Kim concluded his interview by laying out his plans for the next few weeks, as well as legislation he introduced Tuesday to strip Cuomo of his pandemic-related emergency powers. “Do you think Cuomo should be impeached, and would there be Democratic support for that, as well?” asked McCain.

“My colleagues this week, on both sides of the aisle — Democrats and Republicans — have reached out to me, ‘What’s next? How do we get the impeachment process started? Taking his powers is not good enough. It’s going to expire, anyways. What are the next steps?’” replied Kim. “So, right now, we’re actively talking [about] what that looks like.”
