Operation Warp Speed advisor says vaccine rollout ‘needs to improve’ 1

The top advisor of the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed on Sunday blamed state leaders for ineffectively distributing COVID-19 vaccines — though insisted it wasn’t a “problem” that states are managing the rollout.

“Our assumption has been that there is a plan in place to immunize,” Dr. Moncef Slaoui told CBS’ “Face the Nation” of the only one-third of vaccines on hand being used so far in the US.

Slaoui acknowledged that the vaccine rollout “needs to improve,” but said only states can determine where the doses should go.

“I don’t think we are able to identify exactly which long-term care facility or which CVS store should be getting more vaccine or less vaccine,” Slaoui said.

“That has to be done with people that have granular knowledge of their population, their movements, where the older people are.”

But when pressed on whether states aren’t up for the task, Slaoui insisted otherwise.

“I don’t think it’s a problem, franky,” he said, adding that federal officials are “here to help.”

“We are optimistic as we go beyond this holiday season that the numbers will go up and we are standing ready to do what we are asked. Where there is help to be given, we’re standing by to help,” he added.

According to the CDC, more than 13 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed around the US, but only 4.2 million have made their way into people’s arms. Officials had aimed to have 40 million doses distributed by the end of 2020.
