A new documentary that was filmed in secret is garnering plenty of attention, and today is the day we can finally see it for ourselves. Totally Under Control, a film all about the United States’ disastrous response to the coronavirus pandemic, officially premieres on VOD today after weeks of hype, including a gripping trailer with some shocking quotes.
Totally Under Control is the first documentary of its kind — while we’ve gotten plenty of TV shows about the coronavirus, from Freeform’s Love in the Time of Corona to Netflix’s Social Distance, we’ve yet to get a full, feature-length doc about the coronavirus crisis and the Trump administration’s mishandling of the pandemic. The filmmakers created the project over the course of five months, interviewing former Trump administration insiders, as well as scientists and public health officials, to paint a portrait of America’s struggle with the virus.
Here’s everything we know about the man who helped bring it all together, Totally Under Control director Alex Gibney.
WHO IS ALEX GIBNEY?
Alex Gibney is an American director and producer who co-directed Totally Under Control with Ophelia Harutyunyan and Suzanne Hillinger. Before launching his professional film career, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and also attended UCLA Film School. His first film was 1980’s The Ruling Classroom, and his latest is Totally Under Control.
In an Oct. 7 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gibney said he created his most recent film out “an obligation” to tell the truth. “I hope that people will look at a story carefully put together based on facts and render a judgment based on that. You’ve gotta hope and believe in that,” he said, adding, “Trump has done his best to try to destroy the power of facts and to destroy institutions and the rule of law, and we’re seeing the result. But I do think a story like this can make a difference.”
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER ALEX GIBNEY DOCUMENTARIES?
Gibeny has been working for decades, so he’s got a long list of credits to his name. Some of his most notable works include The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks, Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, Casino Jack and the United States of Money and Taxi to the Dark Side.
