President Biden announced a new weekly series Saturday that will feature him calling up ordinary Americans who have been impacted by COVID-19.
Biden made the first of these taped, highly choreographed calls to “Michele” from California, who recently lost her job.
“I was laid off in July. My company had reorganized because of COVID. It’s the first time I’ve been laid off in my life. On Facebook I connect with others who are going through the same thing. I decided to write a letter to President Biden to tell him how I felt,” Michele said in video over dramatic piano music.
The two-minute exchange also offered Biden an opportunity to reiterate his domestic priorities surrounding COVID-relief legislation currently working its way through Congress.
“We’re putting together a plan that provides for emergency relief to people who are in desperate need now,” Biden said. “Everything from mortgage payments, to unemployment insurance, to rental subsidies, to food security for children. It provides for small and medium-sized businesses to be open,”
Michele said she was “so glad” to see the president focused on those issues.
The call was blasted out on all of Biden’s official social-media channels. Just hours after the chat was published, Biden tweeted a message: “If I have to choose between getting help right now to Americans who are hurting and getting bogged down in a lengthy negotiation — it’s an easy choice. I’m going to help the American people who are hurting.”
The call to Michele was recorded from the Oval Office, though Biden plans to spend Super Bowl weekend at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.
