Authorities in California on Monday executed a search warrant with cadaver dogs at a residence in the latest attempt to solve the 1996 case of missing college student Kristin Smart, authorities said.

Investigators are searching the Arroyo Grande home of Ruben Flores, the father of Paul Flores — a onetime fellow student and the “prime suspect” in the 25-year-old case, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Authorities are also armed with ground-penetrating radar during the search for Smart’s remains — which could take up to two days to complete, the office said in the release.

“The search warrant has been sealed,” the office said. “As a result, we are precluded by law from disclosing any further details regarding it. This is an active and on-going investigation.”

Paul Flores, 43, was the last known person to see Smart alive when the 19-year-old student went missing from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo on May 25, 1996 — and hasn’t been seen since.

She was declared dead in 2002, although her body has not been recovered.

Flores was identified as a person of interest after the coed went missing, but has been uncooperative with police and has never been charged in the case.

The FBI and the sheriff’s office have executed several search warrants in the case — all of them sealed — but have not linked Flores to the teen’s disappearance.

Flores was hit with a weapons charge last month after an earlier search warrant was executed at his Los Angeles County home.
