Dr. Anthony Fauci says healthy Americans won’t get COVID-19 vaccine until April 1

Dr. Anthony Fauci says healthy Americans should not expect to receive a coronavirus vaccine until April and that health care workers, the elderly and people with chronic health conditions would be prioritized.

“A healthy non-elderly person with no recognizable underlying conditions, will likely start … in the end of March, early April. Once you get into April, probably full blast with those individuals.” Fauci said during a CNN town hall Friday evening.

“What we would really like to see is once you get into open season in the sense of anybody can get it that we really have a full-court press on getting people vaccinated,” Fauci continued. “The quicker you get the overwhelming majority of the country vaccinated the quicker you’re going to have that umbrella of herd immunity that will be so so important to bringing the level of the virus way, way down.”

Fauci said vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna were just about ready to go and that some clinics have already begun receiving materials.

He said he expected health care workers and the most at risk could begin receiving injections this month after the Food and Drug Administrations grants an emergency use authorization.

Fauci has served as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984 and has spent much of the last year guiding the Trump administration on how best to respond to the deadly pandemic.

The 79-year-old physician will stay on after Joe Biden is sworn in as president where he will serve as the administration’s chief medical advisor.
