How the feds used cell data to track Ghislaine Maxwell to secret compound 1

Newly unsealed court papers detail how FBI agents used cellphone data to track Jeffrey Epstein cohort Ghislaine Maxwell to her New Hampshire hideout one day before her arrest.

The disclosure was made in an affidavit for a search warrant filed July 1 in New Hampshire, one day before 24 FBI agents stormed the remote $1 million Bradford compound, where she’d been holed up for months.

The warrant requested authorization to “employ an electronic investigative technique…to determine the location of the cellular device,” according to the document, which was first reported by the Daily Beast.

Special Agent Amanda Young said in the affidavit that the FBI had used cellphone data obtained from a prior search warrant to narrow Maxwell’s whereabouts to approximately one-square-mile — but they still couldn’t identify the building she and her cellphone were in.

The 58-year-old British socialite had used the phone, which was registered to “G Max,” to contact her lawyer Laura Menninger, her sister Isabel Maxwell, and her husband tech CEO Scott Borgerson, according to the affidavit.

The details provided in the warrant indicate that the FBI may have used a portable “stingray” device, which simulates a cell tower and forces nearby mobile phones to connect in order to hone in on someone’s exact location, according to the Daily Beast.

Maxwell shared a joint bank account with her husband — whose name she initially refused to disclose to the court — and her Amazon account had sent him multiple packages in the prior year, the filing says.

In late 2019, Maxwell paid all-cash for the 156-acre property using what prosecutors called a “carefully anonymized LLC.”

Since her arrest, she’s been locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. A judge rejected a $28.5 million bail package last month, which was Maxwell’s second bid for release to home confinement.

Maxwell, the daughter of disgraced media titan Robert Maxwell, is charged with recruiting and grooming three girls to be sexually abused by Epstein in the 1990s. She has pleaded not guilty.

If convicted, she faces up to 35 years in prison.
