Man who killed Amanda Knox’s roommate freed on community service

The only person serving time for the murder of Amanda Knox’s roommate Meredith Kercher has been released from prison to finish his sentence with community service, according to reports.

Rudy Guede, 33, was sentenced in 2008 to 30 years in prison for killing the 21-year-old British exchange student who was found partially nude, sexually assaulted and stabbed to death in her bedroom in Italy in 2007.

Knox and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were also initially found guilty of the murder — convictions eventually overturned in 2015 after eight years of flip-flopping decisions in the country’s courts.

That left Guede, an immigrant from the Ivory Coast, the only person whose conviction remained after his DNA was found at the scene.

His initial 30-year sentence was reduced to 16 years on appeal, and in 2017 he was granted partial prison release to pursue a master’s degree and work in the library of a criminology center, The Telegraph said.

After also working at a Catholic charity and a food kitchen, Guede was on Friday granted permission to continue the community service for the remainder of his term, which ends in March 2022, the UK paper said.

His lawyer, Fabrizio Ballarini, said the convicted killer will live in an apartment in Viterbo, insisting he is “calm and socially well-integrated” after years of good conduct.

”He will continue with his studies and will also carry on his work” with the charity Caritas, the lawyer told The Sun.

“We are very satisfied with the decision which has come about because of my client’s desire and intelligence and who did not waste his time while in prison but put it to good use and studied hard,” he said.
