Table used to stop accused Monsey Hanukkah slasher turned into menorah stand 1

A coffee table that a heroic Orthodox man threw at the knife-wielding man who stabbed five people during a Hanukkah celebration in Rockland County last year has been turned into a dreidel-shaped menorah.

Rabbi Yisroel Kahan, a leader in Monsey and a member of the Rockland County Human Rights Commission, posted a photo of the shattered table and the menorah stand to Twitter.

“The coffee table that Joseph Gluck threw at the attacker during the #MonseyStabbing, at Rabbi Rothenberg’s Chanuka celebration last year, was transformed into a #Menorah stand replicating a #Dreidel, with the hebrew inscription ‘A Big Miracle Happened Here,’” Kahan wrote.

Accused slasher Grafton Thomas, 37, was found unfit to stand trial in April and was ordered to be held in a treatment facility for up to four months to evaluate whether he would improve with treatment and time.

Lawyers for Thomas — who was diagnosed with schizophrenia and has had long-term auditory hallucinations — last week said he’ll never be rehabilitated to the point he could stand trial and assist in his own defense.

Prosecutors say that a hearing should first be held to determine if Thomas should be deemed permanently mentally incompetent.

Thomas is accused of going on a rampage with an 18-inch machete, injuring five men celebrating the Jewish Festival of Lights on Dec. 28, 2019.

Josef Neumann, who was most badly injured, died in April after landing in a coma resulting from the attack.

Gluck has received several honors for his heroism, including a congressional certificate, the Town of Ramapo’s Freedom Award and a New York State Senate Liberty Medal.
