“Today” contributor Bobbie Thomas says her husband died last week at the age of 42 following “problems involving several organ systems.”

Michael Marion’s death on Dec. 1 was unrelated to the stroke he suffered last year or to COVID-19, Thomas said.

“Michael worked hard to recover from his stroke and had made such progress that he was making plans to return to work,” Thomas told “Today” in a statement on Monday. “He landed in the hospital due to problems involving several organ systems, separate from his stroke of 18 months ago, and unrelated to COVID-19.”

Early in 2019, Marion, a lawyer, suffered a stroke at the age of 40. Thomas, 46, spoke about her husband’s recovery this past May, saying he had progressed to walking with assistance after initially coming home in a wheelchair.

Thomas and Marion, who wed in 2013, shared a 5-year-old son named Miles.

On Sunday, Thomas wrote a moving Instagram post about her husband’s death and her love for Miles, asking her followers to “hold onto what you do have right now instead of focusing on what you don’t. One thing we all have is kindness. Absorb it, extend it, exhaust it. Because in the end, the ONLY thing that matters is love.”

“As I type through tears, I embrace gratitude … holding our precious son Miles and memories, of the time I did have with Michael, closer to my broken heart,” she wrote.

The “Today” show aired a segment about Marion’s life and death on Monday’s episode, and Thomas’ colleagues, including Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, became choked up as they sent her family their condolences.
