He doubted the vaccine. He threatened to sue the federal government over its dispersal. He railed that he didn’t trust President Trump.
Yet there was Gov. Cuomo, preening for the media as Queens critical care nurse Sandra Lindsay became the first person in the US to get the life-saving COVID-19 vaccine. As usual, Andrew had to make it all about himself.
Not mentioned are his comments early in the fall: “Frankly, I’m not going to trust the federal government’s opinion. New York State will have its own review.”
He made a show of appointing a review board. And then? Well that board was barely mentioned again, and gave the most cursory rubber-stamp approval. Guess Cuomo decided the careful work of the FDA and the CDC wasn’t really suspect. The governor got his press conference, he got his soundbite, let’s move on.
Then Cuomo threatened to sue the federal government over distribution of the vaccine, claiming he didn’t have enough money — even though the feds left him an untouched $7.5 million fund. The vaccine was cleared for use Friday, shipped on Sunday, distributed to health-care workers Monday. Doesn’t seem like it’s been the disaster the governor claimed.
Cuomo wrote a self-aggrandizing book about his supposed great leadership during the pandemic. Since then, cases have spiked, lockdowns have increased. He bungled not only the closing and reopening of the schools (pretending it was his decision and then second-guessing Mayor de Blasio’s every move instead) and the opening and closing of indoor dining (shutting down restaurants, but only in New York City, even though his own data didn’t show a problem).
The vaccine is a triumph of private enterprise and the federal government, and we can’t have that if you’re Andrew Cuomo. No, best to throw mud, gripe, and then, when things look like they’re going well anyway, make sure you’re there on camera like it was your idea all along. Get off our TVs, governor, and get out of the way.
