Security experts say there is a need for the police, actively supported by the government to check the current insecurity in Osun State.

The experts have also tasked parents to take responsibility for their children’s upbringing if the situation is to be controlled.

They have also advised the government to equip, fund and resuscitate technical schools as that is one sure way for teeming youths to acquire life skills.

Mr. Oluwole Oladapo, the convener of Nigeria for Good Governance group and Pastor Adewale Adewumi while advocating these measures in Osogbo during a radio programme, asked the state governor to convene a meeting of like-minded individuals who will provide objective solutions.

While making reference to the increase in violent clashes in Osogbo, Oladapo explained alleged that the situation had a root from the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

In his words, “It is a menace the government has to deal with. The last administration engaged and officially institutionalised thuggery in the state calling them ‘state boys’.

“When others saw how the state boys were being paid and celebrated by the government, they decided to join in the party.

“There is a need for definite action and reaction from the government. The governor should react to the issue definitively. He needs to take political and financial actions.”

He said one of the reasons for the current rise in violent clashes in the state, especially in Osogbo is that politicians and the present administration are not patronising the thugs.

Oladapo claimed that there was a connection between street urchins and cultism maintaining that it metamorphosed into gangsterism where cultism have become streetwise moving from the campuses of higher institutions of learning.

The social activists added that political undertones could not be ruled out as godfatherism has emboldened them, stressing that government officials and politicians sometimes put pressure on security agencies to release some of these thugs in captivity.

He revealed that the security situation in the state is connected to the economy and battle for survival because the poverty line is getting thin daily.

Meanwhile, Pastor Adewale Adewumi, said violence in the state has escalated to a crisis point where thugs are not afraid of security personnel again because most of them have been diabolically fortified.

While adding his voice to the creation of state police, he lamented that Osun is now experiencing a breakdown of law and order.

He maintained that the security situation remained unsatisfactory because it was not calm and safe for the citizens.

“The system is not satisfactory and working. It is breeding thugs. Security personnel are now going after innocent citizens.

“There is a need to empower and equip the security agencies to protect and serve”, he added.

On her part, Mrs Abiodun Ige, the Special Adviser to the state governor on security matters has assured the citizens that the government is doing everything possible to ensure the state is safe.

She hinted that the governor is working closely and supporting the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Police and that many cult suspects have been arrested by security agencies and investigations into their activities are ongoing.

In her words, “government will do everything humanly possible to ensure violence is brought down to the barest minimum.

“The police is striving and will not relent in their efforts to make sure the rising rate of violence in Osun is reduced.”

DAILY POST recalls that the spate of violent clashes between rival cult gangs have increased in recent times within the state capital with records of clashes in December 2020 where one person was killed.

Violent clashes were also recorded in March 2021 with escalation every fortnightly which leaving residents wondering how the issue has degenerated to that level in the town.
