Brian Cashman has an explanation for Gleyber Torres’ poor 2020 season.
“I think ultimately he struggled at the beginning of the pandemic [impacted] 60-game season because after spring training No. 1 was shut down [in March] into spring training No. 2, he wasn’t in the best of shape to start the second spring training,’’ the Yankees general manager said Thursday on the YES Network’s “Yankees Hot Stove” show.
Cashman said he didn’t “blame” Torres for not being in the best condition, but said it took him “maybe 40-45 games” at the start of the season to find his form.
“Once we got him back in shape, we saw the last 20 games and the playoffs the Gleyber Torres we’re used to seeing,’’ Cashman said.
Even with better conditioning, Cashman acknowledged Torres was more of a second baseman than a shortstop, although he still believes Torres is “more than capable” of playing short.
If the Yankees re-sign DJ LeMahieu, he could play second, keeping Torres at short and Luke Voit at first. But the Yankees could also trade Voit, shift LeMahieu to first, move Torres to second and bring in a shortstop.
No matter how their infield is put together in 2021, they’ll be looking for Torres to regain his All-Star form.
