Cam Newton not expected back with Patriots for 2021 season

New year, new team.

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton is expected to move on from New England after a short, one-year stint with the team, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Cam Newton resigned this week to the fact that he’ll be moving on from New England,” Schefter reported on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,” via NESN. “It looks like he’s looking for something different, the Patriots are looking for something different.”

After missing nearly all of the 2019 season, 31-year-old Newton was released by the Panthers. He later signed a veteran-minimum deal with the Patriots in July after sitting on the free-agency market for months.

“Both sides enjoyed their relationship, but both sides expect that it will take them to a different place and a different direction in 2021 with Cam Newton likely moving on and the Patriots in search of a new quarterback for next season. We’ll see what direction they decide to go,” Schefter said.

Newton has struggled to adapt to a new system for the first time in his career amid a COVID-19-shortened offseason with extremely limited weapons at his disposal. He has started all but one game this year after contracting COVID-19 and has completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 2,415 yards, five touchdowns, 10 interceptions and has 126 rushing attempts for 513 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns.

Newton won the Heisman Trophy in 2010 and was a two-time BCS National Champion for Auburn. He was selected No. 1 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Panthers, with whom he won the NFL MVP award and made a Super Bowl appearance in 2015. He is also a three-time Pro Bowler and earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2015.

Newton’s anticipated departure leaves the future at quarterback for New England very much up in the air. The remaining quarterbacks on Bill Belichick’s depth chart are largely untested 2019 fourth-rounder Jarrett Stidham and journeyman backup Brian Hoyer.

The Patriots (6-9) are in the midst of a three-game losing streak and have long since been eliminated from the playoffs. They will finish in third place in the AFC East ahead of the 2-13 Jets, whom they face in Week 17 in Newton’s presumed final game in New England.
