Carson Wentz will ask for Eagles trade over ‘fractured’ Doug Pederson relationship

Carson Wentz and the Eagles are still on course for a divorce.

ESPN reported Sunday that Wentz, who was benched in favor of Jalen Hurts last month, is still planning on asking for a trade this upcoming offseason because his relationship with head coach Doug Pederson is “fractured beyond repair.”

The report says the Eagles’ asking price will be high, and that the Colts are among multiple teams expected to have interest in Wentz. Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich was Wentz’s former offensive coordinator in Philadelphia.

The 28-year-old Wentz was benched in favor of Hurts, the Eagles’ 2020 second-round pick, during the team’s Week 13 loss to the Packers. Wentz struggled through his first 12 starts of the year, completing a career-worst 57.4 percent of his passes for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns and an NFL-high 15 interceptions.

After being Hurts’ backup since the rookie took over, Wentz will be a healthy scratch for Sunday night’s game against Washington, according to NFL Network.

Wentz signed a four-year, $128 million extension with $107 guaranteed in April 2019, and the extension kicks next season. The former No. 2 overall pick in 2016 carries a $34.7 million cap hit ($59.2 million dead cap) in 2021, which drops to $31.3 million in 2022 and $36.3 million in 2023, per Spotrac.

His 2022 base salary of $22 million becomes fully guaranteed three days after the new league year begins in March, with his $10 million 2021 roster bonus being paid out at the same time. If they begin to shop him, the Eagles would only incur a $33.8 million cap hit that would count against their 2021 cap in full. It would require another team to agree to pay Wentz’s $25.4 million salary plus a $10 million roster bonus in 2021.

Pederson is expected back with the Eagles for the 2021 season.
