Clippers dole out max extension to playoff no-show Paul George 1

Paul George’s first year in Los Angeles didn’t end well. The Clippers were a playoff flop and he pulled off an invisibility act.

But that didn’t stop the team from locking up the All-Star wing long term. The 30-year-old George has agreed to a maximum contract extension that will pay him up to $226 million over the next five years, according to ESPN.

George averaged 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 48 regular season games for the Clippers, helping them earn the second seed in the Western Conference. But they were upset in the second round of the playoffs by the Nuggets. George was a no-show Game 7, scoring just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

He recently criticized former coach Doc Rivers, saying he was used poorly.

“The way I was being used, I felt Doc was trying to play me as like a Ray Allen or like a JJ Redick, all pin-downs. I can do it, but that ain’t my game,” George said. “I need some flow, I need some mixes of pick-and-rolls, I need some post-ups, just different touches, you know what I mean? That last season was just hard overall.”

Now he has a new coach in Tyronn Lue – and a new contract.
