Daniel Jones looks ready to play for Giants 1

Shortly after Giants coach Joe Judge said he is “fairly optimistic” about Daniel Jones’ chances to play Sunday, Jones showed why.

The Giants starting quarterback looked comfortable running around during the viewing window at the start of Friday’s practice. Jones (right hamstring strain) took the first snap with the rest of the starting offense during individual drills and ran downfield to trail the play.

“I’m fairly optimistic,” Judge said before practice, “but at the same time, there’s a ways to go.”

It seems most likely the Giants will list Jones, who was limited in practice and split team reps with Colt McCoy on Thursday, as questionable on the final official injury report of the week (he was doubtful last week). But Judge would prefer not to make a game-time decision.

“I’m more concerned just with how his body responds, in terms of overall soreness…. I’ll see how he moves relative to [Thursday]. I don’t think it necessarily has to be better,” Judge said. “I just want to make sure that it’s functional and that he can protect himself.”

The prognosis looks bleaker for cornerback Darnay Holmes and linebacker Blake Martinez. Holmes worked off to the side with a trainer during practice – as Jones did last week before not playing against the Seahawks – and Martinez was not spotted on the field during stretching or individual drills after participating in light-contact drills on Thursday.

But all eyes are on Jones.

“Coming out of progress [Thursday], there was some progress made,” Judge said. “We had a long talk with him after practice and a long talk with him this morning.”
