Dwayne Haskins meeting with team as potential NFL return heats up 1

Dwayne Haskins’ former team will play a postseason game on Saturday, but the recently released Washington quarterback is attracting interest from another NFL organization.

Haskins will meet with the Carolina Panthers on Monday, according to an NFL Network report.

Washington will face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the playoffs Saturday night after winning the NFC East with a 7-9 record. The organization released Haskins, their 2019 first-round draft pick on Dec. 28, one day after he’d been benched for fourth-stringer Taylor Heinicke in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Panthers. Veteran quarterback Alex Smith has since returned from a calf injury and will start against the Bucs.

The 23-year-old Haskins admitted after his final game with Washington that he needed to “get my life together” following a tumultuous season that also featured him getting fined $40,000 and stripped of his captaincy for being photographed partying with strippers without a mask in violation of the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols. The former Ohio State star also had been fined nearly $5,000 for another rules violation in October, when he invited a friend to the team hotel.

Carolina has quarterback Teddy Bridgewater under contract for the next two seasons, but Panthers coach Matt Rhule said after the regular season ended that he wants to see improvement from Bridgewater during the offseason.

Because of his release, Haskins does not need to wait until the March free-agency period to sign with another NFL club. Washington is responsible for the remaining $4.3 million on Haskins’ contract, meaning a new team likely could sign him for the league minimum.
