The Giants are taking a chance on John Ross in NFL free agency.

Ross, 25, received a one-year prove-it deal for $2.5 million, according to NFL Network, including $1 million in guaranteed money. This is a total projection based on talent by the Giants. Ross was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and never came close to living up to that lofty draft status.

In four years, he played in only 27 games and has only 51 receptions for 733 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is best known for clocking in at 4.22 in the 40-yard dash at the 2017 NFL scouting combine, breaking a record.

In 2020, Ross played in only three games. He was placed on the COVID-19 list when he left the team to be with his son, who contracted the virus, and later landed on injured reserve with a foot issue.

Ross will join a receiving corps led by Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard. The Giants previously released veteran Golden Tate this offseason after two disappointing years.

The Giants freed up cap space on Tuesday by signing Leonard Williams to a three-year, $63 million deal, which got him off the franchise tag and gave the team an extra $8 million to spend this offseason.
