Kyrie Irving’s Nets absence a reaction to Capitol Hill riot 1

Kyrie Irving will miss Friday’s Nets game against the Grizzlies for what Brooklyn termed personal reasons, and didn’t fly with the team to Memphis.

A source familiar with the situation told The Post that Irving is fine physically, but was upset by the attack on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. by supporters of President Donald Trump.

The Association also reported the Breonna Taylor verdict, and lack of punishment for the officers that shot and killed the unarmed 26-year-old, also contributed to Irving’s decision.

But the All-Star isn’t AWOL, and the team has been aware of why he’s not playing. Irving, in essence, took personal days.

Irving, who counted Kobe Bryant as a close friend and mentor, had left the Garden and didn’t face the Knicks on Jan. 26 after hearing word of the Lakers icon’s tragic death. The point guard was limited to just 20 games in his debut Brooklyn campaign by season-ending shoulder surgery.

Nets coach Steve Nash had stated both before Thursday’s win over Philadelphia and again afterward that he didn’t know why Irving wasn’t playing or at Barclays Center. But a second source familiar with the situation stated that the point guard had not only reached out to the team beforehand, but that the crux of the information had been relayed to Nash.

Irving is sixth in the NBA in scoring at 27.1 points. The Nets play Friday at Memphis on the tail end of a back-to-back, and return home to host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday.
