Mets claim ex-Yankees pitcher Stephen Tarpley off waivers from Marlins 1

The Mets, scarce on lefty bullpen options, claimed Stephen Tarpley off waivers from the Marlins on Friday.

Tarpley, 27, appeared in 12 games for Miami last season and went 2-2 with a 9.00 ERA. He spent 2018-19 with the Yankees.

Justin Wilson was the Mets’ primary left-handed option out of the bullpen last season, but he is a free agent. Last month, the Mets signed veteran lefty Jerry Blevins to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

The Mets also signed former Yankee Brandon Drury to a minor league contract on Friday. Drury has spent the past three seasons with the Blue Jays, who designated him for assignment in September.

Drury was hitting .152 with one RBI in 46 at-bats at the time of the decision.

Mets president Sandy Alderson said it wasn’t easy trading the young talent that went to Cleveland in the deal for Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco.

Alderson, a guest on WFAN’s “Carton & Roberts” show Friday, said there was division among team officials whether the Mets were giving up too much in Andres Gimenez, Amed Rosario, Isaiah Greene and Josh Wolf.

“We said a couple of months ago we want to build through the farm, so there’s a general reluctance on our part to give up any prospects, but to deal for a player like Lindor you have to make accommodations,” Alderson said. “We made it clear we weren’t going to trade our top guys, but acquiesced and put together the package we did.

“Some people in the organization thought we gave up too much, but others were anxious to get him. What gave me comfort was at least one other team was involved to my knowledge and [the Indians] were having trouble distinguishing between the two. I don’t think we overpaid and if you underpay you often don’t get the deal done, so that made me feel we were there.”
