Daniel Jones survived the beatdown.
After taking eight sacks Sunday while playing through a hamstring injury, the Giants quarterback came out of his weekly checkup with team doctors and treatment with “bumps and bruises” and “wear and tear” from hits in the pocket.
“We didn’t do anything that aggravated that leg injury,” Judge said Monday afternoon. “I can tell you there are no broken bones or anything of that nature.”
Jones was 11-for-21 for 127 yards but the run-pass-option plays that make him an effective quarterback were out of the playbook. Judge said he has “no regrets, no second-guessing” on the decision to play a limited Jones over Colt McCoy in a loss to the Cardinals despite McCoy leading the Giants to a win against the Seahawks as a replacement one week earlier.
So, the early read – before seeing Jones on the practice field Wednesday through Friday – is Jones will start Sunday against the Browns.
“If Daniel is healthy to play, and he looks the way he looked in practice last week, I’d have no hesitation playing Daniel at all,” Judge said. “We have a lot of confidence in Colt. But there’s also a commitment we’ve made to Daniel as our quarterback and how we’re running this offense. If he is healthy enough to go out there and protect himself and we don’t feel he is going to be injured worse and he is going to give the team a competitive advantage going out there, we’re going to play him.”
Judge did not rule out using McCoy in certain situations.
