Tony Romo may use ‘Kirk Herbrstreit model’ for Bears-Saints game

CBS and Tony Romo may use the “Kirk Herbstreit” remote model this Sunday for its late afternoon wild card game between the Saints and the Bears, The Post has learned.

Romo had to miss last Sunday’s game due to COVID protocols. He may be restricted from traveling from his Dallas home to New Orleans on Sunday.

Last week, after arriving in Los Angeles to call the Rams-Cardinals game, Romo was ruled out due to COVID protocols, resulting in Boomer Esiason flying across the country to work on the No. 1 team with Jim Nantz.

A CBS spokeswoman said it will announce its coverage plans later this week.

For the National Championship semifinal, ESPN built off of Herbstreit’s home studio so he could call the Ohio State-Clemson game. Herbstreit announced he had COVID in the days leading up to it.

While a final decision has not been made on Romo, CBS would have a similar setup at his home or a local studio. Just as ESPN play-by-player Chris Fowler was on site for the semifinal, Nantz would be in New Orleans for Bears-Saints.

The other possibilities would be for Romo to travel to New Orleans for the game, or for him to be absent.

Romo signed a 10-year, $180 million contract this offseason. He missed a Sunday earlier in the season when Nantz called the Masters.

He has called 15 games this year and, if he does all the playoffs, will do 19 games in total, ending with the Super Bowl in February from Tampa.

Boog’s move

ESPN’s Jon (Boog) Sciambi becoming the Cubs’ new lead play-by-player demonstrates a few things. The first is that ESPN, as The Post previously reported, will cut down significantly on its midweek games with its new MLB extension that will kick in during the 2022 season.

While a prime job like the Cubs will get anyone’s attention, the idea of combining ESPN with a local gig is a way to maximize earnings.

Folks have done the local/national thing for a long time (Mike Breen, Ian Eagle, Brian Anderson), but this could become a further trend with the changing dynamics of traditional media companies, like ESPN. Sciambi will call 130 games, give or take, for the Cubs’ network, Marquee. He will still do baseball and college hoops for ESPN. With a raise tossed in, Sciambi can “Fly the W.”

One app, too many taps

ESPN has a ubiquitous promo that emphasizes “One App, One Tap.” It is a catchy little tune, but it takes far too many taps to find its radio shows.

You go on the app, then you have to click on the bottom right where it says “More.” After that, you have to scroll down for a bit to find “Live Radio.” After clicking on that, there are a bunch of shows to pick from.

For radio, at least, it feels more like “One App, Need a Map.”

SportsCenter cartoons

On Tuesday morning in his show’s new time slot on 98.7 FM, Rick DiPietro said if he ran ESPN he would attract younger viewers with a cartoon version of “SportsCenter.” The idea deserves 4.53/5 clickers. We usually aren’t that much into forced synergy, but this Mickey Mouse idea is not bad.

Clicker books

Dalko: The Untold Story of Baseball’s Fastest Pitcher,” by Bill Dembski, Alex Thomas, and Brian Vikander, describes the exploits of 1950’s pitcher Steve Dalkowski, who is reputed to have been the hardest thrower of all time with a pre-radar gun estimates well over 100-MPH, but, due to control and other issues, was unable to make it to the Major Leagues. The character Nuke LaLoosh from “Bull Durham” was inspired by Dalkowski. Dalko receives a 4.3 out of 5 rating from Papa Clicker.
