Trevor Bauer was ready to join Mets after merch fiasco: ‘It’s f–king over’

If not for his agent, Trevor Bauer might have been a Met.

Rachel Luba didn’t convince the NL Cy Young Award winner to sign with the Dodgers, but she told him to rethink his decision amid his frustration about merchandise popping up on his website prematurely suggesting he would sign with the Mets.

“It’s f–king over, I’m done,” Luba recalled Bauer telling her on the Barstool “Starting 9” podcast. “Call the Dodgers, it’s done. It’s gonna be the other team.”

The “other team” was the Mets. According to Luba, Bauer felt guilty that the merchandise was out there.

“I can’t do that to a fan base,” he told her. “The decision’s been made.”

Before letting the team know his decision, Luba told him to take a walk and further think it through, and not decide based on an error not of his doing.

When they talked 10 minutes later, Bauer had changed his mind. He was going to play for the Dodgers and sign a three-year, $102 million deal, eschewing the Mets’ offer of three years potentially worth $105 million.

The Post’s Joel Sherman reported last month that in the final 24 hours of Bauer’s free agency, the Mets believed they had reached an agreement with Bauer.
