The Yankees lost three prospects in Thursday’s Rule 5 draft, with right-hander Garrett Whitlock selected by Boston, shortstop Kyle Holder going to the Phillies and another right-hander, Trevor Stephan, picked by Cleveland.
They also passed on their own pick, leaving the Yankees’ 40-man roster at 39, which would allow them to re-sign DJ LeMahieu without removing anyone.
The players the Yankees lost must stay on a team’s 26-man roster the entire season or be returned to the Yankees for $50,000.
Whitlock, 24, will have a chance to make Boston’s rotation as he comes back from undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2019. He topped out at Double-A in ‘19.
The 25-year-old Stephan will also compete for a spot on the Indians’ staff. He finished 2019 at Double-A, as well.
As for Holder, the 26-year-old lefty-swinging infielder was the Yankees’ first-round pick (30th overall) in 2015 and played at Double-A in 2019. Known for his defense, the offensively-challenged Holder will vie for a spot on Joe Girardi’s team.
The minor league season was wiped out due to the COVID pandemic, with players at alternate sites.
